Training your dog is an important part of dog ownership. Unless you get a mature dog, you will need to potty train your puppy if you dont want accidents in the house. Probably even more important is to teach your dog that you are his master, and he must obey you.
Put yourself in your dogs proverbial shoes, or paws, rather. Its easy to get mad if your dog is not doing the basic things you teach it. Try putting thinking like your dog would, rather than quitting. Your training will improve if you view things the way they do.
Show your dog that you love them and are proud of them. Its easy in dog training to focus on the negative and try to show your dog that what they are doing is wrong. Make sure that you also work to accentuate the positive and praise them when they are doing well.
When you first get your puppy dont expect him to learn a large number of commands in a short amount of time. Your puppy needs time to acclimate to his new environment. During this time, it is possible to teach him two or three simple commands. Do not move on to other commands until your puppy has mastered these.
Feed your dog consistent amounts at approximately the same time every day. This is particularly important during the house training phase of pet ownership. This allows the dog to establish a regular elimination pattern and the discerning owner can use that pattern to their advantage in speedily training their pet.
Reinforce desirable behavior from your dog. Dont just rely on treats though. You can reinforce these behaviors through positive attention as well. Petting your dog and talking to him in cheerful tones can be a good incentive too. So can a new squeaky toy or a trip to the park.
Exercise
All dogs need daily exercise and it can be an important part of your training efforts. Daily exercise shows your dog that he is a member of the family, as well as letting him know you are a strong leader. Exercise encourages his confidence and provides you with wonderful bonding opportunities.
If your dog barks and growls at strangers in your home, do this: leash your dog, make him sit, wait until his attention is on you, and hand the leash, in full view of the dog, to your guest. Then wait until the dog is calm again, with the guest giving commands as needed. This teaches the dog that your guest ranks above him in "the pack" and he must accept them. When the dog starts to react again, repeat the exercise.
Exercise is an important element of training a dog. A dog that does not have enough exercise will have greater amounts of energy. This energy can come out as chewing on things, playing with people, running around the house, or other unwanted activities. Exercise will help one have a manageable dog to work with.
Nutrition
If you dont monitor treat-style training rewards, your dog might become overweight. Many people overlook treats when considering the animals diet, but they certainly add up, especially during active training.
Your dog will need a diet high in nutrition to maintain his vitality and health. This means that you should be picky about what you feed your dog. Making your own dog food can help to reduce fillers that do nothing for your pet, while increasing the crude protein to a healthy and more beneficial level.
If you do not have the knowlege to train your dog yourself it is wise to take him to obedience school. The instructor will show you how to teach your dog to obey your commands, and as a result, he will be more enjoyable to you and your family, and he will be happier.
